Overview

Goh Swee Kee Restaurant (1977) Sdn Bhd stands as a venerable pillar of Teochew cuisine in the heart of George Town, Pulau Pinang. Nestled at 5, Jalan Sri Bahari, this Chinese restaurant has upheld nearly five decades of culinary tradition and local heritage, making it a destination for both longtime residents and visitors craving authentic flavors.

The restaurant's identity is deeply tied to its classic Teochew offerings—simple yet refined dishes like the signature Soya Sauce Steamed Pomfret, which showcases the bounty of fresh ocean catch with delicate seasoning. The Bean Curd with XO Sauce and Stir Fried Oysters with Bean Paste highlight the kitchen’s mastery in balancing robust flavors with precision. Such dishes echo the nostalgia of retro banquet eateries, transporting diners to earlier eras through both taste and ambiance.

Dining at Goh Swee Kee brings an experience that marries heritage with hearty satisfaction. The space echoes an old-school charm, with a vibe reminiscent of classic Chinese neighborhood restaurants of the 1970s through the 1990s. This atmosphere complements the carefully prepared dishes, served mostly by experienced local staff who add subtle warmth to the meal, even when initial impressions may feel reserved.

The restaurant also caters well to families and groups, with portions thoughtfully scaled to table size. Popular group choices include the deeply savory Braised Chinese Cabbage with Mushroom, the comforting 娘惹排骨咖哩 (Nyonya style pork ribs curry), and fried classics like the Prawn Balls and Fried Egg with Oyster. Their Teo Chew Yam Paste (Orh Nee) dessert, enriched with bits of zesty tangerine peel, offers a sweet finish that remains a highlight for many patrons.

While dishes tend to lean toward traditional flavors, small modern twists like the Basil Minced Pork add complexity without overshadowing the authentic core. The menu’s scope addresses varied preferences, from delicate steamed fish to more robust pork and poultry specialties, accommodating a wide audience—from elderly connoisseurs to younger generations exploring Teochew tastes.

Service, largely efficient and attentive, enhances the dining experience despite occasional moments of brusqueness. Notably, the staff’s responsiveness to diners’ comfort, such as adjusting the air conditioning on warmer days, reflects a considerate approach to hospitality. The restaurant’s selection of tea, including refillable Chinese teas, complements meals well, reinforcing the traditional dining ritual.

Goh Swee Kee is undoubtedly a meaningful culinary landmark for those seeking authentic Teochew cuisine within George Town’s vibrant food scene. Its enduring reputation, rooted in faithful preparation and familiarity, makes it well-suited for diners who appreciate heritage dishes served in a nostalgic setting. Whether one is indulging in the famed steamed pomfret or savoring the velvety yam paste, the experience here is an immersion into Penang’s rich gastronomic tapestry.

A veritable 'lao piao tao' (old brand name) Chinese restaurant, serving up classic and authentic Teochew (Chaozhou) cuisine in downtown George Town Penang. Despite being Penang born and bred, this was my first visit to this famous restaurant which has been in business for nearly 5 decades. Ambience within is like an old school Chinese restaurant, with vibes of retro banquet eateries of days gone by. The 70s-90s flavour in atmosphere and food taste is still evident, with serving staff being mostly middle aged local ladies. The food quality was wonderful and gained the stamp of approval of my octogenarian Singapore Teochew mother!!! . This is no mean feat as mum is still a sprightly 80 year old with 60 years of cooking expertise under her belt. All their menu entrees looks delicious, but based on our visit, we can recommend: 1. the classic Steamed Pomfret Teochew style (super fresh ocean caught fish!!!). 2. the GSK signature Braised Oysters in Bean Paste Sauce (mouthwateringly good). 3. the Basil Minced Pork (a bit of a fusion twist here, but excellent nonetheless). 4. Stewed Cabbage. 5. Deep Fried Prawn Ball Fritters. 6. Teochew style Yam Dessert (Or Ni - lovely sweet yam paste cooked with zesty bits of tangerine peel and ginkgo). Overall, a delicious dinner for our 4 pax group. We'll be back for more!!! .

The food was good, and the staff noticed we were sweating while eating, so they turned on the air-conditioning for us.

Group of 7 went, and we ordered 6 dishes. The waitress said the chef will prepare the portion accordingly by the number of people. Dishes were pretty big, so perhaps we should have told them to cater for 5-6 pax portion per dish instead. The dishes were generally ok, except the cabbage mushroom. It wasn't nice. We were told by the waitress that we needed 2 bundle of cabbage for our table. It was hard to even finish the 1 bundle due to the texture and taste. The assam seabass fish dish was very very good. The porkrib curry and oyster omelette were okay. Porkribs were boney, not much meat. They should use those long ribs.. The oyster omelette was done the soggy way and not aromatic. Service was generally good, but the short haired old aunty was pretty abrupt when talking to my elderly parents. In addition, she was seen being rude and impatient to their foreign waiter, as observed by my elderly mum. The foreign waiter was efficient and courteous. We paid RM350+ for dinner. Tea and plain water for drinks. As a foreigner, I think it's expensive by local standards. Will I be going back? Not really.

Teochew food served in this restaurant is not the best I've eaten, but still delicious. It was a Sunday lunch, and there were only about 3 tables filled when we entered, so not much of a crowd. The cabbage presentation in a flower form was interesting. Though the oyster bean paste dish was 1 of their signature dishes, we had no opportunity to try since 1 of our friends was not an oyster fan. Another great tasting dish was the pig stomach and you definitely have to try their yam paste dessert (orh nee), which had bits of crunchy orange peel in it. Portions were also small, so you won't be afraid of wasting and overeating.

I’ve been here a few times, and what stands out the most is the service—most of the staff look unhappy, which could definitely be improved. The food is mostly good, though some dishes are a bit bland. The crispy chicken is nice, and overall, there’s a good variety to choose from.

Tasty Teo Chew dishes served here, my family are very satisfied with the food. Especially the Toe Chew yam paste, the texture is very smooth, the sweetness is just nice. Parking might be a issue during peak hours. Unfortunately the services need to be improve, the aunties have no smile, feeling like rushing us to place order, not even ask “do u still want to eat?” and start to clear our plates.
